BCM 2007 typo alert

If you are using the September 2006 version of this document to install your Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager database on a server, you need to watch out for a couple of critical typos in the sqlcmd statement on page 9.
First, you need to understand that the way the document is formatted, it looks like [...]

Cyndi Lauper, P.C.

The caption to this YouTube video says “only lawyers will be amused by this,” but I think accountants, consultants, therapists, any many other professionals will enjoy it, as will anyone who went to high school in the 1980s. But stay away if you can’t stand a cappella.

BCM 2007: Get it? Good question.

Microsoft is trying hard to compete in the CRM (contact/customer relationship management) market. Its entry-level product, designed to compete with software such as ACT! and GoldMine, is the Business Contact Manager add-on for Outlook. I’ll probably have more to say about the actual features and benefits of this software later. This post serves only to [...]

My memo to Steve Ballmer

In July 2006, Microsoft hosted the Worldwide Partner Conference a few miles down the Mass Pike from my house. Naturally, I had to attend. While there, I took advantage of my proximity to all those Microsoft managers and handed out several dozen copies of the attached memo, which I wrote during the conference. Nothing has [...]

Schlog joins Technorati

I’m still getting gradually indoctrinated into the world of the bloggers. My latest discovery is Technorati, which is a sort of metasite for blogs. I first discovered it as I was doing Google research about The Schlog and saw that a couple of my posts had wound up on the Technorati site without any intervention [...]

DCOM errors after installing WSS 3.0 on SBS

After installing Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on my Small Business Server, I started getting Event ID 10016 in the system log: “The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {61738644-F196-11D0-9953-00C04FD919C1} to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using the [...]

The perils of remote support

Tonight I went to a client’s holiday party. (We in the small business technology consulting field are always flattered to be invited to clients’ holiday parties, because it makes us feel like part of the team and not just the guy they reluctantly call when something’s broken.) Anyway, the client who invited me is a [...]

Naming rights and wrongs

And I thought I was so clever, calling this The Schlog. Turns out a couple folks beat me to it:
http://www.schmanke.com/
http://www.annthrale.com/blog/
To the best of my knowledge, neither they nor I can copyright or service-mark the title of a blog, but I’ll check with sister-in-law (an intellectual property law professor) just in case.
Also, I swear, I swear, I swear [...]

Diva to the rescue

I think it’s a safe bet that every single blog that discusses Microsoft Small Business Server has at least one link or reference to Susan Bradley. I don’t agree with every single thing Susan says, but I must say she is a butt-saver nonpareil.
Tonight I was applying Exchange Service Pack 2 for one of my [...]
