Outlook 2007 somewhat crippled without Word 2007

One of my clients, whose business is too small to have a server of its own, just signed up for a hosted Exchange service. That means they can use features of Exchange without buying their own Exchange server. It also means they are entitled to a license for Outlook 2007 for each of their users.
It’s [...]

Important tweaks for Windows Desktop Search 3.0

When I installed Office 2007, I upgraded from Windows Desktop Search 2.6.6, which is the most recent version posted to the official Windows Desktop Search site, to Windows Desktop Search 3.0, which is used by Outlook 2007 and OneNote 2007.
Afterwards, I noticed that my searches weren’t as complete as they used to be. I figured [...]

Thinking about Outlook 2007? Slow down.

I thought it was just me. I thought that in my haste to try out the new features of Outlook 2007, I must have made a bad decision during the installation. Or maybe there was a conflict with some other software I was trying out. Or maybe I was just imagining it. But no, it [...]

Office 2007 template location

Upgrading from Office 2003 to Office 2007 has been pretty painless so far, but it just took me about five minutes to figure out how to create a new Word document using one of my custom templates. Since the old menu has been replaced by the ribbon, I didn’t know where to set the file location. [...]

Contradiction in terms

So I’m downloading the latest Microsoft Business and Technical Assessment Toolkit, which is a free tool for Microsoft Partners like me, and for some reason I pause to read the license terms. They include the following passages:
1. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS. You may install and use any number of copies of the software on [...]

Persona non Yahoo

As an independent consultant, I rely on Yahoo! groups to converse with peers all over the globe. It’s a great technology, except when it doesn’t work as expected. For the last 24 hours or so, almost nothing I’ve e-mailed to my groups or posted directly to the groups via the web interface has shown up [...]

What I’m hearing about Vista – part 2

Here’s a detailed but easy-to-read review from ZDNet. It’s pretty much along the same lines as the other review I blogged. It’s really looking like Vista = XP Service Pack 3.

It’s launchtime

A mere two months after the birth announcement for Windows Vista, Office 2007, and Exchange 2007 — and after I complained about the lack of fanfare — Microsoft is finally having their coming out parties. I am attending one today at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Here are my notes from the opening session. [...]

KB, MB, GB, TB, … EB????

What the hell is an EB? I was looking through the contents of a 100 GB external hard drive and saw a rather large file:

Something tells me there might be a wee glitch in the operating system here. I think it’s time to format that drive and start over.
By the way, an EB is [...]

Outlook 2007 finally talking to shared BCM database on SBS 2003

I wrote earlier about problems I was having configuring Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager to use a database on my server rather than on my own workstation. Even after dealing with the typo in the instructions, I couldn’t get Outlook to detect the presence of my database on the server. I was really confused, [...]
