Need a Groove Server? Maybe, maybe not.

Here’s a good explanation of how the components of Microsoft Groove fit together.
Although after reading this, I still have a question: Can people who buy Office Groove 2007 (retail box) or Office Enterprise (volume licensing) share data via the Internet as soon as they install Groove, or do they have to purchase GES? I [...]

Why does technology freak people out?

I got the following e-mail this morning from a client:
David:
Please advise what I should be doing as a result of getting this warning which I have been receiving for about three weeks now…

Identity check time for my profession

Reflections a year after my taping of Vladfire ….
There are many names for people and businesses who do what I do.

IT consultant
Trusted advisor
Outsourced IT vendor
Value added reseller (VAR)
Value added provider (VAP)
Managed services provider (MSP)
Channel partner
Solution provider
God (on our good days)
Those idiots (on our bad days)

The names we choose for ourselves and that others pin on [...]

I’d like to meet the guy who wrote this spam

My spam filtering service is very good, but I still get one or two spams a day. These generally end up in my Junk E-mail box in Outlook. Normally I pay no attention, but this one was so outlandish it made me laugh. Is this guy on a quest to find the most illiterate and [...]

Even Microsoft looses it sometimes

Microsoft programmers are responsible for all sorts of incomprehensible, unhelpful error and warning messages. But at least they usually get their spelling and grammar right. Look what I saw today:

Microsoft, repeat after me: Don’t choose to loose.

Enable Password Changing through OWA in Exchange 2003

I am amazed that in all these years I have never had to learn how to do this before. Fortunately, Daniel Petri shows us the way:
Enable Password Changing through OWA in Exchange 2003
The only deviations I had to make from those instructions were:
1. In the “Create a new REG-DWORD value ….” In SBS03, that value exists [...]

There is such a thing as a free upgrade, but this ain’t it

I got this by e-mail today from my software distributor:

With the launch of Windows Vistaâ„¢ and the known reliability of Windows Server 2003, Software Assurance, a multifaceted maintenance offer from Microsoft, is more compelling than ever. Whether your customers have 5, 50 or 500 PCs, Software Assurance provides the support and features so your customers [...]

Windows Live Writer beta 2.0 released

This is old news, actually. It was released at the end of May. But WLW doesn’t have the highest profile among Microsoft applications. Because it’s free, perhaps?
Anyway, you can read about the new features and download it here. Be sure to read about known issues here. And here’s a picture of the new GUI:

Can’t [...]

Maybe iPhone can work with Exchange after all

As a review I mentioned recently points out, getting an iPhone to work with Exchange is … well, let’s just say there’s a reason that part is not included in Apple’s snazzy iPhone commercials. Chris Rue illustrates this point as well (literally). So I’m not going to be recommending iPhones to my clients. But sooner [...]
