Strike three, out you’re!
In his confirmation hearings, Chief Justice John Roberts famously remarked that nobody ever went to a ballgame to see an umpire. It was and still is a horrible analogy – being a Supreme Court Justice is NOTHING LIKE being an umpire – but I could not help recalling those words today. What people really don’t want to see at a ballgame is the umpire screwing up. Yet that’s what Roberts did at the inauguration. (Not only did Roberts put the word “faithfully” out of order, he also said “President to the United States.”)
By the way, the last time this much damage was done to the word “faithfully” was in 1983.
